Federal Empowerment Agency Scam

PRESS RELEASE 05/22/2014:

The Wood County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a recent financial scam attempt in which a county resident’s Facebook account was hacked.

Once the account was compromised, Facebook “friends” of the hacked account holder were notified via a Facebook post in an attempt to solicit funds.

The post informs recipients they have been chosen as winners of $150,000 (or another amount) from the “Federal Empowerment Agency” and simply have to pay $975.00 upon delivery of the check.

The attempted scam is an example of “Phishing” which is a fraud method in which the offender(s) send out legitimate looking email or online messaging in an attempt to gather personal or financial information from the recipients.

The Sheriff’s Office reminds you to use “common sense” and carefully screen all messages or posts for suspicious content.
