Communications Corporal Posting

The Wood County Sheriff’s Office is accepting letters of interest for the position of Dispatch Corporal.  Those with interest in filling the vacancy must submit a letter of interest that includes a brief synopsis of your work history and applicable training/educational accomplishments. Letters of interest must be submitted by 4:00 p.m. Friday, July 10, 2015 to the Human Resource Office. The following criteria must be met by those applying for this position (may not include all duties to be performed):

  • Completion of a two (2) year period as a Communications 911 Dispatcher;
  • Ability to plan, supervise, train and assign work of Communication Dispatchers, evaluate work performance, provide the required technical and operational guidance and direction to Dispatchers;
  • Define goals and objectives, recommend, write and implement Communication Center policies and procedures;
  • Dispatch personnel or resources in response to calls for emergency service under general direction received from Road Patrol Sergeants or Officers-in-Charge (O.I.C.).  Receive and dispatch all police and fire emergency calls for the County and surrounding jurisdictions, answer calls, monitor emergency service radios and alarms, dispatch police, fire and EMS assistance as needed, and maintain continuous communication with law enforcement and fire personnel;
  • Cooperative demeanor with a “service first” attitude with the ability to work with all Deputies of the Sheriff’s Office and officers with other agencies (ability and willingness to compromise; utilize abstract thought processes to develop problem solving techniques, accepting of concepts offered by others, divisional and office loyalty, adaptive to different working conditions and settings, receptive and responsive to accept new ways of undertaking job duties, supportive of co-workers’ and division’s growth and improvement, and dedicated to meeting division and office goals);
  • Must be able to multitask efficiently (i.e. Being on the phone and typing) Must also be able to type 40 words per minute;
  • Must have a good working knowledge of many computer systems. All Microsoft office programs, LEADS and SunGard CAD programs are preferred;
  • Excellent verbal skills with ability to communicate clearly and effectively under extremely stressful conditions, listen attentively to radio transmission for long periods of time and to information requests from numerous parties;
  • Excellent written communication skills with experience following up on reports and submitting supplements;
  • Process vacation and leave requests and provide sick leave coverage.
